The
finish wasn't pretty but it was exciting. Jeff Freeman, an assistant
pro from Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA, made up three
strokes on the final two holes of regulation play and then defeated
Tim Hval on the first playoff hole to win the first place check
of $12,000 at the 11th annual Rosauers Open Golf Tournament. "I
had never played this course in the wind," Freeman said of Indian
Canyon Golf Course, which held up nicely against the top players
in the Pacific Northwest Section of the PGA. "I just said to myself,
be patient, because I knew if it stayed windy it would be tough."
Freeman started
the final round with a one stroke lead over Hval, Michael Combs
and local favorite Mark Gardner, the head pro at the Creek at Qualchan,
but he stumbled to a one over par 36 on the front side and was forced
to play catch-up down the stretch. Freeman made up 3 strokes on
Hval with birdies on the short par 4 17th and par 5 18th to finish
with a 54 hole total of 12 under par 201. The short lived playoff
started with another visit to the 18th tee box and Freeman won his
first Rosauers with a bogey after Hval topped his drive and made
an unsightly triple bogey 8.
Todd Erwin finished
third at 202 followed by host professional Gary Lindeblad, Combs
and Scott Krieger who all shot 203. Gardner finished in a tie for
7th after making a quadruple bogey 8 from a bush beyond the green
on the relatively easy par 4 15th hole. "In hindsight I should have
taken an unplayable and tried to make bogey and I still might be
playing" said Gardner, who finished with a final round of 72 after
shooting a tournament low 63 in the second round.
