Walt Porterfield,
Jr., took advantage of an unexpected good lie in the trees along
the treacherous downhill 16th hole to make an unlikely
birdie that propelled him to his first Rosauers Open title and helped
snap an 11-year victory drought.
While
nursing a one-stroke lead on the final day of the tournament, Porterfield
pushed his drive off the 16th tee into the trees. Fearing
the worst, he walked to his ball, only to find it sitting up in
sparse grass between the thick trees. From there, Porterfield was
able to knock his ball under a limb and fade it onto the green about
18 feet from the hole.
He calmly rolled
in his birdie putt and later made birdie on the par-5 finishing
hole to shoot an 11-under par 202 that was two strokes better than
Gary Lindeblad, Jerry Minor, and amateur Todd Spence, who tied for
second at 204.
