Host professional
Gary Lindeblad became, perhaps, the most popular champion of the
Rosauers Open by overcoming all the distractions associated with
staging the event and beating Mark Keating on the first hole of
the playoff. Lindeblads win was the first by a host professional
at a NWPGA section event since 1964 and earned him $12,000.
Four
players Lindeblad, Keating, gallery favorite Lou Alleman
and former touring professional pat Fitzsimons were all tightly
bunched heading into the final round. But Lindeblad, playing ahead
of the others, birdied five of his first six holes to jump into
the lead and finished regulation play with another birdie to post
a 54-hole total of 12-under-par 201.
Keating and
Fitzsimons both had a chance to tie Lindeblad by making birdie on
the 18th, but only Keating was equal to the tank
thanks to a superb up and down from a greenside bunker. On the first
playoff hole, Keating flew his approach over the green on the par-4
10th and was unable to get it up and down for the par
that would have matched LIndeblads two-putt four.
